DBT–NIDAN Kendras Call for Proposals 2026

The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, invites proposals from eligible institutions for designation as National Inherited Diseases Administration Kendras under the UMMID Network.

The call aims to strengthen India’s genetic diagnostic ecosystem by expanding affordable and accessible diagnosis, clinical genetics, prenatal testing and genetic counselling services for rare and inherited disorders.

About the Call for Proposals

The Department of Biotechnology invites eligible institutions to submit proposals for designation as DBT–NIDAN Kendras under the UMMID Network.

The selected centres are expected to strengthen existing genetic testing facilities and improve the availability of diagnostic, counselling and prenatal services for patients and families affected by inherited disorders.

Who Can Apply?

  • Government medical colleges and Government hospitals.
  • SIRO-recognised not-for-profit medical colleges or hospitals.
  • The applicant institution must have an established and functional genetic testing facility.
  • The facility may have expertise in molecular genetics, cytogenetics, biochemical genetics or genomic testing.
  • The institution must have a registered Institutional Ethics Committee.
  • The proposal must include at least one co-investigator or a participating institution, as applicable.
  • For-profit organisations are not eligible to receive support under this call.

Proposed Activities of NIDAN Kendras

🧬 Clinical Genetics Services and Genetic Counselling
🔬 Diagnostic Testing, including karyotyping, PCR-RFLP, Sanger sequencing, MLPA and TP-PCR
🤰 Prenatal Testing for thalassemia, SMA, DMD, aneuploidies and neural tube defects
👨‍👩‍👧 Genetic Counselling for High-Risk Pregnancies
📘 Short-Term Screening, Training and Outreach Activities

Funding Support

The programme will provide recurring grant support only for a period of three years, subject to annual review.

  • Consumables
  • Training programmes
  • Contingency expenses
  • Domestic travel
  • Overheads as per applicable DBT guidelines
Important: No non-recurring or infrastructure grant will be provided. Applicants should already have the necessary laboratory infrastructure and genetic testing facilities.

How to Apply?

  1. Confirm that the institution satisfies the eligibility conditions.
  2. Prepare the technical proposal, institutional details, investigator information and supporting documents.
  3. Register or log in to the DBT eProMIS portal.
  4. Select the appropriate DBT–NIDAN Kendras call for proposals.
  5. Complete and submit the online proposal on or before 31 July 2026.
Proposals will be accepted only through the DBT eProMIS portal. Submissions through email, post or any other mode will not be considered.
