Doctoral Fellowship Programme For full-time Ph.D. scholars in Disaster Studies

Financial support for eligible full-time Ph.D. scholars undertaking research related to disaster-risk reduction and disaster management.

Fellowship as per UGC JRF and SRF norms

Innovation & Action Research Projects For faculty members, scientists and engineers

Support for applied research, technology, policy studies and scalable interventions addressing major disaster-management challenges.

Financial support up to ₹8 lakh

Best Ph.D. Thesis Ranking Recognition for outstanding disaster studies research

National recognition for completed doctoral research with significant scientific, practical and policy contributions to disaster-risk reduction.

Recognition for first, second and third-ranked theses

Who Can Apply?

• Candidates enrolled in a full-time Ph.D. programme in a UGC-recognised university, institution or college.
• Applicants should have completed their Ph.D. coursework with at least 60% marks.
• Candidates awaiting their coursework result may apply by mentioning the status in the prescribed bonafide certificate.
• The Ph.D. synopsis should have been approved by the parent university or institution.
• Applicants whose synopsis approval is under process may submit the prescribed institutional certificate.

Total Fellowships Five fellowships are proposed under the current programme.

Maximum Fellowship Period Up to five years or until submission of the completed thesis, whichever is earlier.

Innovation and Action Research Projects

Eligibility for Principal Investigator

• Scientists, engineers and faculty members holding permanent positions in eligible institutions may apply as Principal Investigators.
• Contractual or ad-hoc applicants should possess the experience required under the official guidelines.
• Applicants may be from recognised universities, academic institutions, research and development institutions or State Government Administrative Training Institutes.
• Co-Principal Investigators should possess relevant experience and expertise in the proposed research area.
• The PI and Co-PI should provide evidence of relevant publications, projects, patents or copyrights, wherever applicable.
• University and institutional applicants should comply with the IUINDRR-NIDM membership requirements stated in the official guidelines.

Examples of Research Topics

• Financial and institutional determinants of disaster preparedness.
• Disaster-risk financing for mitigation, recovery and reconstruction.
• Predictive modelling of cloudburst, landslide and subsidence interactions.
• Site characterisation and seismic-risk reduction.
• Last-mile early-warning services for micro-level flood forecasting.
• AI, GIS, remote sensing and drone-based forest-fire warning systems.
• Sustainable planning for pilgrimage-related disaster-risk reduction.
• Reform of mental-health and psychosocial-support systems during disasters.

Financial Support Selected research projects may receive support of up to ₹8 lakh from NIDM.

Project Duration The proposed project or study should normally be completed within one to two years.

Number of projects: Five research projects or studies are proposed for selection under the current call.

Best Ph.D. Thesis Ranking in Disaster Studies

Theme for 2026–27: Earthquake—Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery.

Eligibility

• The nominee should have submitted or completed the Ph.D. within the two years preceding the start of the call.
• At least two research papers related to the thesis should have been published in recognised national or international journals.
• The nomination must be endorsed by the research supervisor or Head of the institution or university.
• Self-nominations will not be considered.
• Members of the IUINDRR-NIDM network may receive priority according to the official guidelines.

Recognition

• Framed certificates for the first, second and third-ranked theses.
• National-level recognition from NIDM.
• Opportunity for the first-ranked thesis to be developed and published in book form by NIDM.
• Potential use of the research outcomes for policy advocacy and state or district-level disaster-risk reduction.

• Completed nomination form in the prescribed format
• Curriculum vitae of the nominee
• Synopsis of the doctoral dissertation
• Official confirmation of completion or thesis submission date
• Recommendation letter from the Head, Dean or Vice-Chancellor
• Copies of research publications arising from the thesis

Note: A complete copy of the Ph.D. thesis is not required at the initial application stage.

How to Submit the Application?

1. Download and carefully read the complete official NIDM guidelines.
2. Identify the appropriate category: Doctoral Fellowship, Research Project or Best Ph.D. Thesis Ranking.
3. Complete the relevant application or nomination format provided in the official document.
4. Obtain the required signatures, institutional endorsement and forwarding letter.
5. Combine all required documents into a single PDF file.
6. Email the soft copy to researchiuin.nidm@nidm.gov.in.
7. Send one signed hard copy by Speed Post or Registered Post to the Executive Director, NIDM.
8. Complete both submission requirements on or before 31 August 2026.
