The Smart City Hackathon 2026 is organised by IDEA Lab, Kumaraguru College of Technology and IEEE Smart Cities. The event encourages teams to identify local urban problems and build technology-driven solutions with measurable societal and environmental impact.

About the Smart City Hackathon

The hackathon provides a platform for participants to transform creative ideas into working solutions that address real-world urban problems.

Participating teams will progress through idea development, abstract submission, team shortlisting, solution development and a final product demonstration.

  • Identify a meaningful local urban challenge.
  • Propose an innovative and feasible solution.
  • Develop a functional prototype or demonstrable product.
  • Receive exposure through workshops and demonstrations.
  • Present the final solution at the project expo and demo.

Hackathon Workflow

1 Workshop Learn, ideate and build a strong foundation.
2 Abstract Submission Submit the proposed idea and solution abstract.
3 Team Selection Shortlisted teams will be notified.
4 Build Phase Develop and validate the proposed solution.
5 Expo and Demo Showcase the final innovation before the evaluators.

Team Formation and Participation

  • A team may consist of one to four members.
  • Participants should select one of the announced themes.
  • The proposed solution should address a local urban challenge.
  • Teams should prepare a clear and concise idea abstract.
  • Only shortlisted teams will proceed to the build phase.
  • Selected teams must present their final product or prototype on 5 September 2026.
Idea selection tip: Clearly describe the urban problem, intended users, proposed technology, novelty, feasibility and expected social or environmental impact.

How to Register?

  1. Form a team of one to four members.
  2. Select the most suitable smart-city theme.
  3. Identify a practical local urban problem.
  4. Prepare the proposed solution and idea abstract.
  5. Open the official registration Google Form.
  6. Enter the team and project details correctly.
  7. Submit the registration form on or before 31 July 2026.
Important: Teams are advised to submit their registration before the last date and retain a copy or screenshot of the submission confirmation.
